Is Marwood on a bad comedown in scene 1

PostPosted by Cool your boots » Wed Oct 07, 2009 1:00 am

Right at the start of w&i Marwood is freaking out, he exclaims 'I'm in the middle of an overdose' and seems to go into a full blown panic attack, what have they been doing prior to this? Withnail just wants more wine and its early morning. Neither of them seemed to have slept for 60 hours.

is it LSD, strong ganja, is Marwood on a bad comedown?
This doll is extremely dangerous. It has voodoo qualities.

I believe that Marwood must be on a marijuana high. Doesn't Withnail advise him to eat some sugar during the whole 'why don't I get soup?' fiasco?

Looking for my script, but it's probably somewhere under a pile of other books and/or dishes...

That was close. Found the script after 5 minutes. Yes, immediately after Marwood comes back from the 'Wanker's Cafe' and Withnail informs him with the distressing news, Marwood is terrified and feels dreadful.

Withnail: ... Sit down, for Christ's sake. What's the matter with you? Eat some sugar.

Of course, Withnail's instruction may be a red herring as he may have said that as a kind of blanket instruction, him not really giving a rat's arse as to what exactly Marwood may be suffering and him, Withnail, being more concerned with his own comfort.

God, I should do some work...

The Wikipedia page on Withnail says that the film starts with Marwood smoking a joint. I always thought it was a plain cigarette (filter-less), but I suppose it is a well-rolled joint then.

I very much doubt he is supposed to be smoking weed. He seems so inexperienced with weed when they smoke with Danny at the end.

Perhaps what you see as his inexperience is really his anxiety caused by the memory of that initial bad trip?

[Damn, I wish my dvd wasn't scratched; I got a chicken waiting to be roasted, a bottle of red, some stuff purchased off of Presuming Ed... all set. Maybe I'll just read the script.]

I could, but here in the rural outback there are bandwidth issues. Bandwidth amount is capped; and the pre-cumbrian speeds make youtube a drag - you have to pause for aeons while a clip loads. Although, I did once, over a period of time watch the whole of the World at War series...

But I'll give the DVD a polish and try again.

Yes, and, given speed, thus marijuana. They hadn't slept for 60 hours (speed), so perhaps some marijuana to help with the comedown (eat some sugar). I've always thought or assumed, since it is the morning, that Withnail is asleep in his room when Marwood offers him tea. What is he doing in there if on speed? And, if on speed, why are they not hanging out together? I'm also intrigued by Marwood lighting the range to boil water and then wandering off. Drugs man...

Someone should write an off-stage screen play, in the tradition of Rosencrantz and Guildernstern is Dead, which, by the way, was made into a great movie also late 80s early 90s. A close companion to Withnail & I, at least in my book.

Because of the echo, I have always assumed Withnail is in the bath. Also, isn't his hair wet when Marwood returns from the cafe?

My god, how did I miss that. Of course!

Are you having a laugh?

Well, I never read Hamlet, apart from a few pages, so I skipped that question in English I; but I learnt more about Hamlet via Rosencrantz and Guildernstern. But I thought the dialogue was excellent.

About being uneducated? Not really. I hardly got any qualifications, and I left school at 16. No university. No nuffink.

About 'R&GAD' the film? Probably did not appreciate it as much as I would now. I saw it because Tim Roth was in it.
