Sherlock Holmes

Has anyone else seen this new film? It references Withnail numerous times.

Half way thought my girlfriend whispered to me 'this might as well be called Withnail and Marwood investigates'

There is even a publicity shot of them sitting outside 221 baker street on the door step Withnail and I style!

I saw it the other week, and thought it was worth a look. I've seen much worse films. It also tried a few things I haven't seen in films before.

Can anyone name the actual Withnail and I references in the film? There was a general similarity between Holmes and Watson and Withnail and Marwood but I didn't catch any specific references.

Interestingly, at the same time as Sherlock Holmes was a popular literary figure (1890s) there was an American called H. H. Holmes who was hanged in 1896 for being the country's first serial killer. In Sherlock Holmes style, he even wrote a book about his escapades from prison, which is available on the net. As the movie's main policeman said, in another life, Holmes would have made an excellent criminal.

I wouldn't call "Sherlock Holmes" a great film - it was actually quite boring for a lot of it, and the Sherlock Holmes character is that only in name. He doesn't bear any resemblance to his literary namesake. But it has a few ok parts, like the fight scenes, some of the London scenery, the main villain, the Tower Bridge scene, the various tricks used by the villain which Holmes exposed Then again, I know quite a bit about that decade and the one after it, from reading several long works published at the time, over a period of a couple of years. I'd like anything from that time that was half ok. For someone unfamiliar with that great era, I can only imagine the experience would have been like hell.

Thanks Crooked and Forkit. Confirms my suspicions. I'll give it a miss then.

It's that two smoking barrels wanker isn't it? Tried watching that once, influenced by youngsters who recommended it as edgy. Yes, so, jump cuts etc. But basically bullshit.

I'm out, like 98. Hah.

i dont think holmes has been portrayed better on screen than by jeremy brett in the tv series. even basil rathbones efforts, though good, weren't as faithful to the descriptions of holmes appearance and manerisms in both the short stories and the novels, as brett's. i think i will avoid this latest incarnation.

You mean this...?

http://sherlock-holmes-movie.warnerbros.com/#/gallery/

I saw the pic in the paper tonight and laughed. It is clearly a homage/rip-off of the infamous 'Withnail' steps photo.

What I have seen on the official '...Holmes' website, it looks like a fantasy horror film. Very 'Harry Potter'esque too. Very little of the brainwork/sleuthing that I remember of the Basil Rathbone/Nigel Bruce 1940s' Holmes and Watson.

Thanks, crooked.

The uncropped photo shows the hands almost in identical position to those in the 'Withnail' photo. (See banner at head of forum.)
