We couldn't afford Sleddale, we can't afford that.
They found him wandering round Regent's Park with a cheap bottle of sherry...

And like a fool I mixed them and it strangled up my mind, and now people just get uglier and I have no sense of time...

Oh, so REG has a house in Camps Bay. Splendid!

Very upmarket area; very popular for sundowners and whatnot now in summer. I go and slum there once or twice a year, but can't stand the pretension and aspiration. Over-priced food, except for the burgers at the Sand Bar.

REG's house is a bit, how shall I say, nouveau; obviously not home, as such, but I was still expecting a more bookish feel to it.

@HE Bates

Well, it has been emptied for the purpose of selling...

Yes, indeed.

But it is furnished, and the lounge area has wall hangings. I guess I'm disappointed that his holiday house looks like a holiday house.

@HE Bates

I have seen photos of what I believe is his London home in Richmond, and I believe that would appeal more to your prejudices of what REG's home should look like.

As for homes being 'bookish', surely that would be more Bruce's style than REG's. I am not accusing REG of being illiterate (far from it: he wrote a respected diary), but REG was more BR's muse -- while Bruce is more yer man of words.

@Purveyor

my prejudices are indeed formed by glimpses of his home, to be seen on the Dear Diary episode that Crooked linked to on here somewhere. It was 'bookish' in the sense that it was full of stuff that indicated all sorts of curiosities on REG's part.

His London place looks smashing. Full of groovy stuff.
Wasted, yet content to be so.
