I know he read for "Withnail" but did he read for "I"?

I think he would have done the home county boy perfect.

If you mean Kenneth Branagh, then he was offered the part of Marwood but turned it down because he wanted the part of Withnail. As Robinson says in 'Smoking in bed' "He could have played Withnail, but it would have been a podgy Withnail,.... I don't think he'd of had that spenectic depth that Richards got"

Hope that helps

okay then.

I still think he would have made a good Marwood.

I can't think of anything that I've seen him in, so i can't really comment on his acting ability. Is he 'pretty' enough to play Marwood though, then again I suppose he is if Robinson offered him the part. I can only picture him with a beard, which wouldn't have done.
I doubt Robinson would of had a problem with Ken's accent like he did with Paul's mind.

Branagh is one of my all-time favorites, primarily in his awesome full-length movie "Hamlet", which he directed AND starred in. A project like that would have put most people in the hospital with exhaustion, but not Branagh. He's a powerhouse.

That being said, he just wouldn't have been right for any character in W&I. He's a Shakespearean actor through and through - very correct, very sharp, full of energy.

The only perfect actors for W&I were the ones in it.
... followed by yet another anecdote about his sensitive crimes in a punt with a chap called Norman, who had red hair and a book of poetry stained with the butter drips from crumpets.
